Postby newportlongboard » Mon Jan 16, 2012 12:14 pm

hi everyone

im looking to book a trip to cali this year flying out the last week in august and then staying two weeks.
the first week will be spent in LA and the second in San Diego. Im a intermediate longboarder, i just wondered what breaks would be best for an intermediate and at that time of year???

Thanks

You can never go wrong with Surf City, Huntington Beach CA in north OC (near Long Beach).
During the US Open surf competition last year in August the waves were pretty small but formed well.
In San Diego I recommend South Carlsbad (warm waters) or even the family beach "Moonlight" in Encinitas.
La Jolla shores is an easy going wave area most of the summer also.

It does depend on what storms are going on hundreds of miles away too, so it can always change.

All in all I say you would have the most luck between May and October.

...o yeah....and nobody says "cali" here :P

For the original poster's interest: The waves in Carlsbad are generally smaller then those elsewhere in North County (can't comment on the rest of San Diego as I hardly ever surf there). They would be fine for longboards, but are generally too small for my liking.

I might be spending a week or two there in San Diego in the summer. What are the crowds like (dare I ask)?

You'll be hard-pressed to find parking close to the beach at most spots, but you can always find a spot on the beach where it isn't busy on the sand & nobody in the water as San Diego has a lot of beaches.

San Diego has spots that are WAY less crowded than, for instance, the OC. There are some very popular crowded longboard breaks, but you can also find some beach breaks that have sparse surfers. See you in the summer
