Indo Balance Board - Any good?

Postby landlockedsurfer » Sun Dec 18, 2011 12:14 pm

Living a good couple of hours from the coast am thinking about getting an Indo Board for a bit of practice at home etc.

Seems a fair bit of dosh and just wondered what other people's opinions of them are. Is it money well spent or not?

Cheers guys :)

It's ok, I bought one awhile back and yea they're fun to mess around with. I live in an old apartment and the neighbors downstairs would not appreciate the crashing noises so I rarely use it. Does it translate into surfing skill? Hard to say. I think it taps into a very small portion of what makes for a successful surfer, there's a lot more that goes into surfing than just side to side balance.

Yes, I think they're great for training muscles and balance.
They depend a lot on what you use them on - thick carpet is very very slow, while a wooden floor is super-quick (and much more fun).

No, they're not surfing, but yes, they do help.

i did borrow one from a shop, and gave it a good try. its brilliant fun, and there are certain techniques that you can practice that help with surfing moves, i.e. grabbing the rail, or hang ten, hang five. they are designed to increase your core muscsles and help improve balance. there is brilliant video online of the inventor, and its desgined really for all board sports.( snowboarding, surfing, skateboarding). like has already been said, they are great fun to use, and it can help you improve on certain aspects of surfing, its nothing like standing on surfboard. or very little. they are quite expensive for what they are, and you could make one if you wish. but if your going to use it a lot then i would say go for it. why not try one one, or see if you can borrow one for a week or so. i had mine for a weekend and its amazing how quickly you can progress on them and get cocky. haha. if i had the money spare, then i would get one.

Regards,

Tj

i'm on a budget so made my own. sheet of 18mm ply. jigsaw to shape (36"x18"oval), cut to end stops and screw to base of board.

for the roller a bit of soil pipe with one or two inch wide strips of grip tape around the circumference.

also a balance cushion from any sports rehab place about £12 instead of the £25 for an indo one.

i'm not proud of doing it, but £30 for the lot (made two) instead of £109 was the only way i could get one.

i use it in our tiled kitchen on a rubber backed floor mat. is much faster than a real one. i think the cushion is much more of a challenge as the balance is in two axis rather than just one.

That's the reason to get one, and will help your surfing no end.

That's the way to do it. Here's how to make your own.

Anything that uses the legs for ‘fast twitch’ balance improves surfing – even if you thinks it’s crap and boring.
