Need help pls - opportunity to get my 1st surfboard

Postby Kulyokul » Sat Nov 12, 2011 10:55 am

Hi All,

New member here. I've been reading the forums and I have to say that I genuinely enjoy the vibe and wealth of information going around. I have been surfing for less than a year borrowing my friend's board which is a 7'11 fun board. Recently, I visited a shop and they have a Mctavish Carver on sale. I can either get an 8'1 or an 8'6 for roughly the same amount which is within my price range. They also have a McTavish 8ball but just a tad more expensive. Just a bit of info, I am 5'7 and currently weigh at 168lbs. I'm not a strong paddler as I injured my right rotator cuff a few years back. However, I really enjoy surfing and am determined to stick to it.

Would an 8'6 make it easier to paddle as against an 8'1 or 7'11 or would this be of no consequence? I've thought about going for a 9'0 but I'm really unsure at this point in time whether I can manage the length when heading out.

I hope to hear from you guys soon.

Cheers!

Hello,
Bigger boards are much easier to learn on for beginners. You say you have been using your friends 7'11" how is that going? I would say if it is between the 8'1", or 8'6" the 8'6" will be easier for learning and more stable. If you already feel experienced enough then the 8'1" may be fine, but only you know your skill level. You also want to look at the width, thickness, and fullness of the outline. I do know the McTavish Carver model and it is a great board!

Good luck!
