Surf simulators vs the real thing

Postby Katza8uk » Sat Nov 12, 2011 7:15 pm

Hey guys, just wanted to get your opinion on something! My mate wants to start to come surfing with me, but before hand he wants to do some 'research'. Which i think is a good idea, cos his knowledge of the sea, tides etc is pretty limited. He wants to try the surf simulator at our local leisure centre. Do you think this is a good idea? I kinda disagree, cos he has never even been body boarding, and as far as i'm aware, simulators are unable to teach you the basics, like paddling out, catching a wave etc. So whats your guys take on this? Should he just man up and jump in the deep end so to speak? or is this a good idea for a real complete beginner?

I would tell him to get a good surf lesson instead.Try to ask lots of questions if he really wants to learn to surf. Also try to get a good instructor who will take the time to teach you how to surf, and not just take off to show him how it is done.

Good luck!

Get him to skip the surf simulator. He'll learn far more getting out there and giving it a go, with some decent pointers from you.
If he feels that paying out for something to get him started, spend the money on a lesson as tony suggests.

The surf simulator if I remember correctly is similar to the bullriding simulator, just bouncing up and down and slightly round and round but getting more extreme as the ride goes. It bears no resemblance to the real thing you only learn how to stand on a wobbling platform. If this does become his learning process, keep him away from my beach he is going to be a danger to himself and everyone else.
Harsh but true.
I've taken up troll hunting just for fun, instead of a rifle I'll just use a pun! 冲浪爷爷
