places to learn to surf in southern california

hey does anyone know any good place to learn to surf in socal. since i skate asd snowboard i dont think i will need lessons. you got any tips on anything else

I used to skate before I started surfing and whilst it helps with balance and turning, it's the paddling that'll do you in.

It might be worth having a short 2 hour lesson just to get the basics down.

You shouldn't be short of spots in socal - that whole coast get's loads of surf (it is the birth place of US surfing afterall!)

My only real tip is to get in the water as soon as you can and give it a go, then repeat this step as often as possible til you hit your 80s!!

I learned to surf this past summer.

Here is the progression my cousin took me through to learn.

Bolsa - Easy slow waves, small, and spread out, not to bad of a paddle, $5 to park

San Onofre - Bigger Waves , Longer Paddle, Longer Walk, but still a nice slow wave to learn on. Still $5 to park ;)

Oceanside - Still not too crowded and fairly consistant waves a bit steeper then Bolsa and San O, when it's big be carefull it's not a ncie wave.

Hey I know this is a super old post. I learned to surf at a break called Blackies.. just N of Newport Beach pier. It goes off in winter... right now is good for long boarders.. you get an occasional day w/ sets of fun size waves. Locals are pretty kook friendly too! Great sunset surfing, meters are FREE after 6 pm...but black ball has been going up early w/ summer crowds...Best times are 6am-9am or after 6
