standing up too far forward!

Postby vandangos » Sat Oct 22, 2011 5:51 pm

been surfing for 3-4 yrs now 1-2 times a week, id say im an intermediate...im not bad, better than the average guy in the water can do cuttys, hit the lip, foam climbs and the odd floater. iv always had this problem of standing too far up on my boards  (so bloody annoying) when i stand my back foot is just in front of the traction pad....so i either try and re-adjust or make a half arsed turn before getting into a better position. just wondering if anyone's got any tips/guidance on how to stand up with my back foot on the pad?

cheers,

karl

 you must be a professional surf trainer with that sort of advice Surf Hound.

Karl, one suggestion is placing your hands slightly further back than you normally do on the pop. Another suggestion someone found worked for them on this forum was lying a little futher back on is laying further on their board.
I think that with your experience, it may be possible by simply keeping in mind that you need to place your back foot a little further back and making sure you try to accomplish that every time you pop.

I had the same problem on my 6'3" flyer, I'd frequently pop up too far forward and then search for the traction pad with my back foot. Well I recently snapped the nose on that board and while it was in the shop picked up a 5'10" rocket. Mind you, I'm 5'10" so the flyer was propably a bit large for me. With the shorter board, my back foot is always on the pad when I pop, and the front foot is far enough forward to be able to gain speed as needed. Not sure if that helps you or not, but for me I was able to compensate for my poor technique by changing up my equipment.

If you aren't using a tail pad buy one, then concentrate more on having your back foot in the right place, the front will be natural based on your stance, you pretty much stand they way you stand, trying to correct your stance is harder than just correctly your back foot placement

Great tips . Since changing from a 6 foot short board to a 6 foot 7 fish I have had problems making turns . Was blaming the increased volume in the new board . This morning had a surf made sure my back foot was on the traction pad and like magic the board snapped back easily .
