Board for the crappiest conditions imaginable?

Postby Flatout » Wed Oct 19, 2011 10:28 am

Hey all...
So i need a board for really bad conditions. i am 85 kg, 1.80cm
3-7ft waves. wind waves, very messy, very mushy, with no power. There is allways 20-30knots of wind.
My skill level is I usually longboard, but can get up on a 6,10 shortboard. However there is not enough power in the waves for the shortboard.
The longboard works really good for the power of the waves, but because the waves are everywhere and the high winds it is very hard to stay in the right spot.
So i need something that i can duckdive under the waves, easy to paddle which can still surf powerless whitewater.
Is this possible or should i stay with my longboard?

Yes, get a fish! I have a 6'0" Randy French Fish and it skates through the flat spots, picks up lots of speed in junky wind blown surf, and is a blast to ride. It is a great board to ride on those junky days when there is not much to ride. If you get the right fish you will have lots of fun in the junky surf. Don't get your fish to big or it will not be as quick and responsive. Good Luck!

Thanks, I'm geussing a quad is the way to go, and then play around with twin/quad setup?

What size would you recommend? I am really worried about it being to small for the conditions, the 6'10 shortboard just sinks after the momentum of the takeoff weares off...

I can't really tell what size fish to get because everybody is so different. You have to think about your weight and your ability to pump and manuver your board , so I can't just say this is the perfect size for you. If you can borrow or demo a couple diffent sized boards to help you make a good decision. As far as your 6'10 just sinking after you lose your momentum, keep in mind a fish has a wider outline and therefore will stay on top of the water much better. The wider outline also helps it to come to life quickly in gutless waves, which is why you don't need a huge one. Yes the quads are popular now, but either way you will have fun. I use a twin fin with a small trailer fin and it has tons of drive and is still loose.I hope this helps you in choosing a board.
