What do you do with your keys?

I wear my key around my neck on a fat shoe string placed under my wetsuit.
If I didn't have a wetsuit, I'd get a locking box like real estate agents use and affix it to the trailer hitch on my SUV.
If you have the time to search this forum, then you'll find many thorough discussions and ideas.

About the waterproof key pouch - where does it go? which one do u have?

The best case would be to cut a non-electronic key and attach that to the inside of your wetsuit. Mine have a little loop of chord underneath the armpits to do it with.

The alternative would be getting a waterproof key pouch (I have one), getting a combination lock for your car, or hiding it somewhere/ leaving it with someone. Personally I wouldn't do the latter.

I found this works the best. I place the key in my wetsuit. Most wetsuits should have a small pocket for keys.

Most board Shorts have Lanyards in the pocket and they work great.

It goes in the same place as a regular key, I tie it to the chord and it rests at my side. It does get a bit annoying but tolerably so.

I have a cheap one I bought off e-bay, any one should do but avoid the Northcore ones as I bought one and it split after a few sessions. The one I have cost about 4 quid and has this slide lock system at the top which seems a bit dodgy but the thing is airtight so definitely watertight.

Works really well until you come after surfing till after dark and you can't see the combination bit in the dark. Holding matches or a borrowed cigarette lighter with one hand until it gets too hot, trying to turn the little dials with cold numb finger, dropping the hot thing, good Australian cuss session.

I typically put my non electronic key inside a small pocket in my wet suit. However, I had a problem taking my waterproof camera out surfing. I found a product called the Wallaby Surf Pouch that fits my camera and holds on in over head surf.

HEY guys, I've been wondering about the issue of where to leave your car keys since me and my buddies got robbed with those new lockers.
If we hide the key, someone can just watch you and steal your car easily, and if you get them with you to the water with time they will get rust.

I want to ask how many of you would pay a simbolic amount like 1,2 or 3€ for someone to keep your keys safe in the parking surf spots, so you could return and don't worry about your car.

I'm a new surfer. I took several lessons a few months ago and i'm ready to buy my own board and get out there My oddball question is, where do you put your car keys when you go surfing? I was thinking ziplock bags and keep it in a zippered pocket, but i'm not 100% comfortable with that. I was also thinking a magnetic box hidden under the car, but again, not fully comfy with that. Any tips and thoughts would be appreciated!! Thanks!

I have a non electronic copy of my key that I tie in my board shorts. I hide the electronic one in my car and then use the button on the door to lock the car. Works good for me but I am also friends with a lot of beach goers so they probably would keep an eye on my stuff as well. But I don't surf anywhere that this would be a profitable business.

Just take the key out with you and rinse it with fresh water when you're finished. I did that for years with my previous car and never had any issues with rust(that should be the last of your worries). I now use a lockbox for my fob. Personally, I would never pay anyone to watch my stuff but maybe beaches/setups around me are different so I can't relate.

Just get a waterproof key pouch and take your key with you, I tie this either around the string in my baggies or you just put it around your neck and inside your wetsuits, never had a problem with letting water in, even put my phone in it a few times to take pictures.
I can separate the electrics bit of my key from the actually key itself and lock the electrics bit in my car, tying the key to my board shorts as Oldmansurfer does, I used to do this all the time but someone told me if your car gets stolen with your key inside the car your insurance wont cover you, not sure how true this is.

I guess that means the chip isn't affected by immersion in water. That's good to know.

Reread that quote, a regular key copy not an Electronic one. You open the door and the electronic one is stashed inside. Would you pay the large sum for the electronic ones?

How did they break into yours? My friends just got their windows smashed because their gf left their ridiculous stupid expensive bags in the car. One smashed window and one happy thief.

If you drive a nice car in a shitty area, I don't think it matters whether you have a key or not.

Ol' Man,
Big H is saying he has a metal key for the door lock. Some modern automobiles using the fancy electronic keys can be unlocked and even driven with a conventional metal or plastic key. No chip in the keys Big H and I take into the sea.
