Starting on shortboard?

Postby Hanalei » Sun Sep 18, 2011 7:01 pm

I'm sure questions like this have been asked billions of times, but here it is: I've surfed a few times (and loved it!). I do some sort of workout almost every day, and am in pretty good shape. I have very good balance, but I have noticed that quite often, when I pop up, my feet aren't even on the center of the board, which makes me fall. (I have been working on that, however, and it seems to be improving) I know it's much more challenging to ride a shortboard (especially someone relatively new to surfing), but for someone with good arm strength and good balance, would it be possible for me to buy a used shortboard? The longboard that I learned on was far too bulky for me (I'm a girl, and about 5'3" and around 100 lbs.) I'd guess that the longboard was probably around 8 feet long :?: but I really have no idea. With enough practice, would I be able to just go right to a shorter board?

Thanks! :D

I would go for Mini-mal kind of size, you dont want to be getting onto a short board just yet! maybe look for something 7`6 sort of lenth, bit more barable as far as turning goes, but also stable and easier to pop up on! once cracked on this sort of board then move on to a shorter board!

I learned on a short board.it isn't easy. today was my brothers first surf session, I bought him a shortboard 6,2
he is about 5,8. he had a lot of trouble finding his balance, he couldn't sit on the board and he had a bit of trouble paddling.you can see cause the surfboard was all over the place. its a challenge, but when you get it, its the best feeling on the world.it isn't impossible, you will learn it, what is in question is how fast you will learn.
