Bali 3 month Surf Trip

Postby jton0001 » Sat Oct 01, 2011 9:49 am

Hey all, I'm planning to travel over to Bali for a few months next year in July (Provided the world hasn't ended). I'd say im a paltry intermediate level surfer, can go down the face of a wave and turn but can't back turn or any of that stuff. I definately need to work on my skills. I was wondering if there's anyone out there who could make any suggestions for lodging, cost of living, whether its a good place to go fro low-level surfers looking to improve. Any help appreciated, thanks!

Hey! Bali rocks it has many places for all types of surfers, however there are a lot of excellent surfers there also and most waves break over shallow reefs (outside Kuta, which is a beach break, you could go there to start) I would advise getting practice first, the waves over there are fast and powerful. Head down towards Legian and Seminyak - it is less crowded and you can find good places to stay. If the swell picks up tho - no way you can surf down there so just pray for small swell...

Bali is really geared up for tourism, and there are loads of places to say - no matter what your budget.

Look at Heaven on the Planet.
Easy waves, no matter how big.
Everything supplied except nightlife.

I am also a paultry intermediate level surfer, and went to Bali recently. My impressions:
- Bali is pretty cheap, has nice weather, and friendly people, but very congested, with terrible traffic,
- Motorbikes are very cheap to hire, but I wouldn't advise this unless you already know how to ride.
- Kuta beach has great surf for learner and lower intermediate surfers, offshore winds from April to October, thousands of boards for rent right on the sand. Best surfed at mid or high tide - Waves are dumpy/close-out at low tide. Often rather crowded. Lots of surf schools there.
- Kuta is unsurfable when waves get above a certain height, which happened for 4 consecutive days during the middle of my stay.
- Some other surf spots (e.g. Uluwatu) are for advanced surfers though I met learners who were having lessons at Bingin, Dreamland etc (I don't know whether you can easily hire boards at such beaches)

I'm looking forward to going back there next year :-)

Carlocol don't put yourself down everybody who surfs has been an intermediate surfer and your are reasonably aware as your advice on Bali is spot on.
The people who are dangerous at any level are those who have an inflated opinion of their ability or their place in the pecking order at a break.

Go back have fun and you will find that each time in Bali is a little easier :!:
