Still not sure about size

Postby mojojojo » Thu Sep 22, 2011 6:34 pm

Hi,

I just moved to SoCal and I wanted to start surfing, so I took a couple classes on longboards (8'+) and I could stand up and all, so I want to buy a board now. I am 190lbs and 6'2". I plan on surfing 3-4 times/week so I want something that will last me at least a few months and that I can resell without much difficulty. I was thinking of something around 7' would be nice, is that a good idea? How much should I expect to pay for a (used) board this size?

Thanks a lot!

This all depends on the waves you're surfing on, what style of surfing you would like to pursue, etc. For a beginner, I wouldn't go shorter than 7 foot unless you're ok with being frustrated for the first couple of months as shorter boards are significantly harder to learn on.

If you're looking for a general suggestion, as a beginner you really can't go wrong with a funboard or a mini - mal (7 foot to about 8 ). Where in socal will you be surfing?

In San Diego, most likely Pacific/Mission Beach, occasionally at La Jolla. I honestly don't know about the wave types there since I'm a beginner.
