Why Is Surfboarding Not An Olympic 'Program'?

Postby Dispatch » Tue Aug 30, 2011 5:50 pm

With ridiculous activities like Curling, Ping Pong, Darts, Boules and so many other asinine events.... why is Surfboarding not considered a serious sport in the Olympic program?

If anything probably because all waves are different, therefore some are easier to ride than others I would think.

This part of New South Wales is sponsoring a new sport called Surfboardem it's been flat for almost the entire month of August and now extending into September. :(

But who wants surfing to become too mainstream anyways?
If surfing was put in the olympics it'd be over

One thing that also stops surfing entering the Olympics is surfing has no drug testing regime. :?

I found this article about drug testing for surfers. It would seem the the ASP are making some changes!

A fair criticism would be that the ASP find it hard to apply a consistent formula for judging and the other reason that might be the most pertinent is, not all countries have surf.
Personally I'd rather not see surfing as an Olympic event, purely self interest. Imagine if surfing got popular in China or India

Note likely, Chinese culture promotes conformity and surf is the last thing the parents will want kids to do.
If anything, skate is more accessible to Chinese kids, yet it hasen't taken off for the same reason.

That makes me double happy, but if it is seen as a status toy like many other things western it still may be a problem.
I'll see how I go in Taiwan, knowing full well there is some ideological difference between there and the mainland1
