Shortboard recommendation

Postby prideomg » Wed Aug 31, 2011 2:41 pm

Hey guys,

I have been surfing for 3 years (11 weeks) in France, mimizan mostly on a NSP mini malibu 208 cm (think thats 6"10) and Im able to drop-in properly and surf the wave to the side.

At this point I do think Im ready to get a shortboard but since I have no idea what is important Im posting here :)

I am 190 cm in length and I weight about 73 kg. Changes will be big Ill be surfing in france as usual but i might go to bali and go try out dreamland which is a beachbreak aswell :)

So what do you guys recommend for me, which dimensions would i need?

If you have any further questions please do not hesitate.

Since you are over six foot tall I'd be inclined to get a board of similar length to the 6' 10" you have now or maybe down to 6' 6" just look at a more functional shape still with some volume but more defined in the rails if you like the Global Industries stuff as per your NSP, then look at 7S for a 6'8"or the Webbers the One or After Burner at 6' 8" both of which are a good step up in function from a minimal. ( that definition is about shape and function not length BTW). If you wanted to go down below 6' I think you would be giving yourself a lot more frustration for where you are in your learning curve.
You will notice that the weight recommendations for the boards I suggest are more than you weigh but this is because when you get more proficient you can decrease the volume but I'd still stay as I suggest.

If there are good shapers around where you live then go to them for your first custom, but I think my suggestion covers the next intermediate step for you.
I've taken up troll hunting just for fun, instead of a rifle I'll just use a pun! 冲浪爷爷
