OOOooouch - keep smashing my leash foot

Postby wjp » Wed Aug 24, 2011 11:54 pm

Just wondering if anyone else gets this. Since moving to a shorter board I keep smashing the top/inner side of my leash foot. I get two good thumps every session. Its starting to get really really painful now, and looking pretty bad. Sometimes its just the leash pulling hard against it as the board buggers of one way and me another, but lately I've been smacking it against the board.
This morning is was pretty heavy out there and I somehow managed to put a hole in the rail near the nose and I'm thinking the serious pain in the left foot is the reason. Just hope its not broken (my foot that is!).

Anyone else or just me?

I used to get that. Its all in the pop up - you need to make you're popping UP (rather than forward) and the first thing to come forward is your knees, clearing the deck on the way past.

Counter-intuitively, a later drop will help as the board will be further below you as you pop.

That is very odd. The closest I get is slicing my foot on my outside fins (particularly my right foot) as I go from sitting to lying down. Not given myself a gash yet but it is only a matter of time.

You're not using a rubber band as a leash are you?

Now that you mention it my leash foot has taken a beating at times during wipe-outs, but it's always been from the fins. I only have one scar, and it's a 3inch slice on my leash foot from a run-in from the fin. But the worst I get is when I go over the falls with my board under me. That sucks when you're like, dang I hope I don't land on this thing.

I was wondering whether to go up another foot in length on my leash. Is there any risk is going slightly longer? It is generally happening in the bigger conditions. I actually put a small hole in the rail near the tip with my foot last week. I've been wear booties and in conjunction with the small surf a the moment haven;t hit it much.
