I have unbelievably bad luck. How much is the damage?

Postby Mayday981 » Fri Aug 19, 2011 5:19 pm

Hey guys,

I had been using a 8 foot foam board for a month now and pretty much gotten the hang of paddling, sitting, pivoting, catching waves, etc.

So I bought a new 8 foot longboard two days ago. I got it all waxed and put on traction pads. I had unscrewed my fins during that time. I think there was a possibility I didn't screw it tight enough.

I went into the water today for the first time with the board. I was thinking that it would be easy to transition since my foam board was 8 foot. Well, it was a huge learning curve. I thought I was learning how to surf again.

Well, cut to the chase, I was sitting and practicing pivoting when a huge wave came. I thought that it would pass me and break but it actually broke right on me. I was rolling around for a good 5 seconds. When I came up, I saw my board and saw one of my fins gone. I noticed there was damage also around the glass.

So I got a couple of questions:

1) Is this repairable?

2) How much will this cost?

3) Are there any surfboard repair shops in LA that you trust to do a good job?

Thanks for your help guys.

Hey, don't beat yourself up about it (the ocean has already done that for you...) ;)

Yes, an easy repair - the fin plugs popping out is a fairly common event.
The cost shouldnt be too bad, although the price of a new set of fins might be...

Thanks drowningbitbybit. I really felt horrible after seeing my board without the fun. I'm definitely going to respect the ocean from now on. No more being inattentive while out in the ocean!

Oh and I did take it to a repair shop and it's going to be about $65. They said they'll try to find a spare fin to put on the board but I may end up having to buy a set of three fins. :(
