Take off

Postby Alex Weaver » Wed Jul 06, 2011 10:51 am

Hy there, I ride my 6.2 shortboard about few days now. I'm pretty ok with paddling, duck dive, sitting on my board, and on the 4th day I stood up and ride 4 times. But I'm not quiet comfortable with the point when I need to stand up in the green. Most of the times when I power paddle for the wave, the nose of the board is submerging and the wave just push me front and I just slide down from my board, cuz the nose is stuck down under the water. Can you give me some advance, what is the best point in the power paddling to stand up, and how can I recognize it? Thank you in advance.

If the nose is submerging then you are too far forward. With regards to standing up, earlier is better; try to do it as soon as you know you are on the wave.

So, what do you recomend, when I poped up, what is the best to do. Just go straight, or I need to turn straight away as I caught the wave?

hey alex, it's called pearling. it happens when you are either too far forward on your board, or you aren't lined up correctly on a steep wave. I don't know how your 6.2 is shaped, but if it's a standard shortboard i recommend simply arching your back. that should shift your weight enough aft to pull the nose up. if that doesn't work then move back on the board. also, leaning to one side and angling the board down the line will buy you some time.

as far as when to stand up: you could ride the whole wave on your belly if you're balanced correctly on your board; but if you stand up too early you'll miss the ride. You'll learn to feel when the time is right, but until then error on the late side. if you feel like you're in the wave, take two more strokes before you stand up.

how much you need to turn depends on the wave. some require an aggressive angle, some don't.

hope that helps

Yeah Bro, it is a great help, because I never arched my back, and always paddled into the wave straight, and didn't care with the angle. Just one more question. What do you think, which stand up is better, the quick pop up, or the knee pulling? I'm always using the knee pulling, cuz it's slower and give me some comfortable when I'm balancing, but I'm not sure that this is the right way on a shortboard.

Thanks

The quicker the better in my opinion. Belly to both feet in an instant is ideal. You can drill on land, but it's something that I think you'll naturally build to over time. For now, do what you need to in order to get up and riding.
