Buying a new board tomorrow

Postby Ryan88210 » Wed May 25, 2011 3:03 am

Buying my first board tomorrow. I'm stuck on what to get. New to surfing but I'll be doing it often bc I love the water and any water sport in general so I don't want to just buy a longboard and then want something with more maneuverability than a LB or funboard a month later. I'll be surfing in south Texas so smaller waves will also be a factor. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!!! Forgot to mention, I'm 5'10 175lbs and in good shape.

Beginner... small waves...
You need a longboard.

In about a month's time, you'll be able to stand up, maybe even ride the wave a little bit. You won't be needing a board with more maneuverability just yet.

Amen to that, + you may be in good shape, but surfing will show you that you need to be in a different good shape.

You will be seriously underwhelmed if you go the shortness route.

Should've mentioned that I do have a little (nothin worth bragging about by any means) experience and that I can catch waves on the longboards. I can get up and ride. I'm just worried about buying the LB and then wanting something shorter in a short time. I know I don't need to be thinking about the short boards. I was wondering more about length of the board. Would a 7-8ft board still give me some room to try turning as skill progresses? Thanks for the replys!

A board in those ranges you ask about can turn, so can a 9fter.
It's not the board that can't turn, it's the rider.
Short boards can do tighter arcs under less experienced feet but modern long boards can go lots of places too. Your choice and it could pay off.

Here so you can see what you can do with length in good waves. Some shots of me on my Mentawai trip.

Don't be afraid of length is the moral of this posting
BTW happy board hunting it's one of surfing great pleasures :D
