Dominican Republic - Surf holiday

Postby Johno » Wed May 25, 2011 11:41 am

Hi all I am looking for some were to go on a 2 week holiday with my girlfriend - it has to be a good price / very nice hotel coz my girl wont settle for anything less, hot and surf on the hotel door step so she can sunbath and I can surf - not looking for epic waves I am quite happy with 2 - 4 foot fun fishy ripping waves.

My quest has drawn me to Dominican Republic can any on advise if there are waves along the Bavaro complex and Puerto Plata they face the correct direction to pick up swell but can’t find much info on the internet. I have read that Marco beach north of Bavaro picks up swell but is half hour car trip from the hotels.

The other option was Punta Plata but I think that is to fare facing east to pick up any swell.

In a nut shell I am looking for a last minute deal, hot weather, 5 star all inclusive, and surf on my door step - any advise would be much appreciated.

Disclaimer: I own own a surf camp on the North Coast.

Where we are located on the north coast is the most consistent for Surf, we go the best surf in the winter time, but we have year round fun rideable surf. Summer the east swells are usually in the waist to head high range ( A lot bigger when a hurricane passes north of us).
The south coast, bavaro and Punta Cana are not that well visited by surfers, since it's just not very consistent.

All inclusives in the Puerto Plata region are an option for you and your girlfriend, but keep in mind that the Cabarete area were the most consistent summer surf is, is about 35 minutes away by taxi.

Cabarete itself has numerous good hotels in all price ranges, around 20 dollars for a basic hostel to 200 for very fancy.

Here's some more info http://www.swellsurfcamp.com/cabarete/surfing.html
or contact me here or via our website if you have anymore questions, regardless of whether you want to stay with us , or not.

Have a good trip

Hi Johno,

We are a little boutique hotel right next to Playa Encuentro, the main surf beach in the Dominican Republic.

Playa Encuentro is the most consistent spot in the Dominican Republic. Usually we get those 2-4 ft fishy waves you are looking for during the summer months. Nevertheless you can get unlucky sometimes in summer and the waves can get very small. Still you won't find any better waves in the Dominican Republic as around Cabarete. All the other spots are not really a an option for you. If you want to have a look how it's gonna be more o less, go to http://magicseaweed.com/Encuentro-Surf-Report/478/ and look at the eyeball reports of the last days.

Our hotel is the closest to Playa Encuentro, so we meet your needs of having surf on the doorstep and we have a nice garden where you can relax and sunbath. If you are interested just have a look at our website www.hookedcabarete.com.

If you have any further questions regarding surfing here just let me know.

Aloha
