Duck Diving Funboard?

Postby Verde » Fri May 13, 2011 1:43 am

Hey everyone I've been reading the forum for a bit now but just got an account, you have all been very helpful so far! So my question is about duck diving. Right now I'm riding a 6'6" funboard/eggshape on about 2-3 footers. I've been getting along pretty well with turtle rolls, but since I eventually want to move down to a shorter more aggressive board, I'm going to have to learn to duck dive. So is learning to duck dive on a board like mine a possibility? or is the eggshape just to buoyant?

Depends on the volume of the board (what are the dimensions - width and thickness?) and how heavy you are?

A 6'6 is definitely duckable, but a lot more difficult than a wafer-thin shortboard with a pointy nose. You'll have to be hyper-aggressive about it - no pushing down a little bit, it'll need 100% commitment and thrust that board underwater. Get practising

I've got a 6'8 egg with loads of float. I'm a weak girl and haven't managed to duck dive it so I've just bought a very cheap and slightly battered short board that I won't be able to surf but plan to learn to duck dive. I'm hoping once I have the technique down I'll be able to transfer it to my floatier board ( :-? )

The full dimensions of my board are 6 6 X 19 5/8 X 2 1/2. I'm 5'5" 140lbs. Thanks drowningbitbybit, I'm glad to hear that it is possible and I'm not wasting my time (and energy!) trying to learn on this board. Zebroo that is a good idea I actually have an old beaten up shortboard my friend gave me. I think I'm going to try that next time its flat, don't want to miss the action on a good day!

With those board dimensions and your weight, it should be possible, but will take a lot of practise.
Good luck.

So I thought I'd give a little update. I've been out surfing everyday since I posted this and I feel I've made some pretty good progress on the duck dives. I can get deep enough to where I don't get smacked hard, but I still am getting pushed back farther than if I just powered through it. I definitely feel that I will get this down eventually on this board, its just going to take a lot of practice :D
