How do you not go straight?

Postby Ben Marcus » Sat Aug 28, 2004 6:46 am

Every time I paddle into a wave on my surfing board, I go straight. And can't turn. People that can turn cross over me and cut me off all mad and call me names like kook and donkey and mean stuff like that. I am willing to pay top dollar for lessons/instruction. I ride a seven foot red Gucci surfboard, a Piping Hot spring suit, and neoprene boots to protect my tootsies from the rocky shoreline. If anyone knows of a surf teacher in the Santa Cruz area, . Your help is ~GREATLY APPRECIATED~!

dude.... First, try your local shop, But I can try to tell you how to turn.

1) when paddling for the wave start out at a very slight angle.
2) when you get to the bottom look to where you want to turn.
3) rotate your sholders to be inline with your head.
4) rotate your hips to be in line with you sholders.
5) do not lean, if you lean you will catch a rail.

you do lean a little this is also called angulation the point he is making is dont over exagerate the lean to put yourself off the board.leaning forward can help get you down the wave leaning back can drive your tail down into the water to gain more control by slowing you down leaning into the wave can help drive your rail deeper to maintain control ect.and If ya cant find somone down there and I'm pretty sure you can there are a number of surf schools in santa cruz drop me an e mail mabe I can surf with ya somtime and help cretique some of your riding skills. It would be an excuse for me to go surf in santa cruz. Not that any excuse is realy needed to surf in santa cruz

abotu the rotating shoulders then hips, does that mean that you rotate your shoulders and then your hips so ur facing the same way ur head is, sop if u had eyes on ur chest they would be looking owards the nose of your board?
