The feeling at surfing and how long to become good?

Postby nico900 » Sat Feb 19, 2011 8:32 pm

Hi

I'm from germany and this Year, I will go for 1 Year to Australia, where I want to learn the language, the culture and especially to SURF 8).

Last year I made my apprenticeship to a snowboardteacher, and someone told me, that the feeling at surfing beats also the feeling at snowboarding in powder.
After that, I decided to make my year abroad in australia.

MyQuestions:

Is it real that the feeling at surfing is better than snowboarding??

How good can I become in one year constantly surfing with a little bit talent?

Sorry for my bad english : :?

I don't think there's a better feeling in the World than being out in the lineup. It's a peaceful feeling. (Most times). You will find out for yourself. To each person it means something special. It's a great way to relax and clear your mind. As far as how long it will take you to get good? Everybody progresses at their own pace. I have been surfing for 37 years now, and I've seen people get "good" in less than a year, and have seen people struggle for years only to give up. You have an advantage being a snowboarder. It should at least help you with your balance. I skated before I surfed and it seemed to help me. It takes a lot of practice and time to get good. Enjoy your year in Australia!!!

Start swimming laps in a pool and get your swimming muscles in shape. That will help you more than anything, starting out. The more waves you paddle into, the more times you fall, the more times you learn something, and the sooner you'll get the hang of it.

It's not quite like snowboarding, how you learn in about 2 hours. Surfing takes a lot longer just to get the hang of paddling into waves, let alone standing up and riding one. You can definitely learn to ride a wave down the line in a year if you go out frequently and charge!

Snowboarding through powdery glades is just amazing to me. I love some untouched stuff in really tight trees! That being said, catching a big wave is definitely a way bigger rush than snowboarding. But, you only ride that wave for 5-30 seconds! Snowboarding, is much less work for your pleasure, and it lasts a lot longer.

Like JDAWG said, surfing as much as you can will help you. You will know what works, and what doesn't. You will find out pretty quick if surfing is the sport for you. Not everyone is cut out to do it. Swimming a lot helps, doing upper body exercises, squat thrusts and a bunch of core/ab exercises. Don't forget to do some cardio as well. Getting an Indo board would be helpful too.

Oh yes,
The real surfing feeling is way beter than the snowboard feeling, sitting in the line-up waiting for your wave to come and then.... oh man.. that is such a nice feeling.
It actually depends on you how much effort you give to learn surfing, if you don't give a lot of effort stop right away but when you really like it and you are really going (almost) each day surfing you can become real good! But learning to surf isn't like learning snowboarding it takes way more time to stand up on a board than to snowboard a blue piste!! And do wat JDAWG said: train, train train!!! you'll really feel it when you are in the water if you are trained or not!!

Well have fun and good luck!
