Why not surf a gun?

Postby IB_Surfer » Fri Feb 11, 2011 6:21 am

I posted this at at another forum (changed it a little) but wanted more input:

Saturday I was at work and got the itch to surf. I had a 2 hour window in which to go so I grabbed a 7'4 thin skinny gun that a bud donated to the surf club, and used the gun to catch a bunch of 3ft faces, easily.

So, why is it wrong to use a gun when it's not big? Sure, I could not do hard cutbacks and such like a shortboard, but it was a small day and man it was WAY easy to catch waves, sort of like being on my fish. I know it's not the intended use, but why aren't we using guns as funboards???? Also, I know I used a thin skinny gun because, well, I can. But california guns are wide and thick, perfect for a begginer. Just seems more versatile than a funboard.

I've taken mine out on small days. They catch waves well, but don't turn nearly as well as a funboard on small waves. Also, I think another big factor is rocking up the the beach on a waist high day and pulling the 7'4" pintail gun out of the car. My friends rip on me for that.

Edit: Sorry, didn't see the part about the California guns being wider and thicker. I can't really comment on those boards, but if they ride well in the small stuff it's probably just due to conformity/cultural reasons.
