Where to buy a specific board?

Postby jb514 » Tue Dec 28, 2010 6:25 am

So I've figured out what board I want. Now where should I go to get it? If my local shops don't have the board in the dimensions I want can they order it for me?

If you go to a 'proper' surf shop they'll have a shaper who can make a board for you in any shape and dimensions you want.

Will a shaper make essentially a copy of an Al Merrick board? And how much should I expect to pay (USD)?

Why specifically an Al Merrick? Fashion? You know what you are talking about? You're Kelly Slater? What model specifically?
A shaper will make a similar shape to an Al Merrick generic model but somehow I get the feeling that a little more "advice" might help your selection process improve.
Most clued in surfers know a shop know a shaper, prices, etc, I get the impression you are new to surfing and other boards might be a better help to you.

I surfed a friend's al merrick a couple of weeks ago and really liked it. The price tag is a little bit unsettling, so I'm looking for a cheaper option

Fair call JB there are Channel Island surf boards in good range in the Surf tech models, maybe they are cheaper! Borrow the board again and take it to local shaper and talk about what you like about, this option may cost more but could give you some insight. Enjoy!
