Need advice on whether to go shorter, thinner or narrower...

Postby ringemaster » Thu Nov 04, 2010 7:43 pm

Hey all,

I need some advice.

I'm 6'3", weigh around 190/195 and I've been riding a 6'4" Aloha Quickshift (19 1/2" wide x 2 1/2" thick) for the past 4 months and I've loved it, EXCEPT I can't turn it fast enough and when the waves get to about 8ft. or bigger, it doesn't handle as well (mainly because I can't turn it fast enough). I was in some shallow surf a few days ago and broke the nose about a foot down, so now I'm looking at either replacing it or going with something different. What I can't decide is if I go with something different, do I go shorter, thinner or narrower to improve my turning capability? I've loved that my board has a flatter rocker through most of the board, but more nose flip to still allow easy paddling and some performance in bigger waves, and I'm a big dude, so I still need a lot of foam. I've been looking at a 6'2" or 6'3" Flyer or Flyer II, which seem to have similar dimensions, but might be a hair shorter and give more performance. I'm open to other options, but want to know what I should be looking for to gain that extra maneuvreability.

Thoughts?

I would say some extra tail rocker and a little narrower, but the best is to speak to your shaper.
