HI all,

Here is some basic info on me and i want your opinion on what i should buy board wise ... i like long boards but want to move to something shorter. I read all the beginner info on this site and now want to hear from the actual guys that go surf daily .

I hope someone can help me find the right board and give me some great tips etc.

Depending on how long its been since you surfed regularly is the question. I did not surf for 20 years and moved back to Hawaii just so I could surf again. Getting back into it was not as easy as I envisioned. Probably took me 2-3 months to stand up regularly but from then the learning curve went real quick. I would recommend mastering a 9 foot long board then steping down to whatever you want. Wrost case scenario is you catch tons of waves, have fun and get back into surfing shape. Starting off to short will only prolong going shorter if that makes any sence. Besides you should always have a reliable long board for days when the surf is not so great anyway.

drunkmrhat,
Thank you for serving our country!

You can find some interesting Huntington Beach information in the recent post by me at:

To answer one of your questions directly, use a 9-foot longboard at Huntington Beach. That's what I do. You can find a nice one at a good price on Craigslist dot com.

drunkmrhat,
you must be talking about one of the three breaks at San Onefre State Beach (just south of San Clemente). San O is my favorite place in the entire world to surf. It's got big fat swells, rides that are more than a minute long, warm water, and friendly vibe. Another one of the breaks there is Dog Patch. That is especially good for someone getting back into it. Then move over to Old Mans or the other break (forgot its name).

You can camp down there, too. Here is the State Beach web link:
