Getting a surfboard shorter than yourself

Postby naniekso » Mon Sep 13, 2010 6:21 pm

Have any of you guys(experianced) done this? I'm thinking of getting a 5'10 surfboard although i'm 5'11.89 or 6' :D

I'm looking specifically at the Santa Cruz Gdeck surfboard. I've been wanting one ever since my pumkin seed got a ding in it. According to the manufacturerererer i can go up to 8 inches lower than my normal shortboard. well my normal one is 6'4 or 6'6 so i can definatly pull off the 5'10

i was just curious what you guys thought about riding a board shorter than yourself

Kinda paradoxically, I dont think this works if you're tall... you'd think it would be easier to go 2" shorter than yourself if you're 6'... but height makes a bigger difference than you'd imagine (rather than just weight).
Some 'vertically challenged' friends of mine can easily drop below their own height, but at 6' I struggle below about 6'2 (Im talking real shortboards here, rather than fishes).

Also - dont believe the manufacturers "You can go 8" shorter!!!!!" - this is just marketing. Their surfboard is still just a surfboard.

it definitely depends on your skill and what type of board it is. the g deck is generally a small wave type board with a wider profile and some thickness to it like most modern fish hybrid shortboards. im 5'8", 140lbs and my standard shortboard is 6' and i ride a 5'9" CI flyer for smaller waves since its a little wider and thicker. if i were to get a g-deck id get the 5'5" since its super wide and thick at 20.15" and 2.63". that would have plenty of float for someone my size. heres a chart that santa cruz has on their site for the 5'10" youre looking at:

Board Specs
Length 5'10
Nose 15.2”
Middle 20.8”
Tail 16”
Thickness 2.75”

Suggested rider weights:
Expert: 195-220 LBS.
Intermediate: 165-185 LBS.
Novice: 160 LBS. and under

i would agree with those guidelines and depending on your skill level i think that would be a good fit for you. ive been wanting to try one of these type of shapes but cant find any used ones in my size. when youre getting a small wave board that you want to be able to maneuver like youre shortboard you have to make sure not to go too big otherwise itll be slow and harder for you to turn.

anyways good luck man and i bet youll be happy with it if you get it
