PLEASE HELP!

Postby wannarip » Fri Aug 20, 2010 9:26 pm

Hi guys,
i bought a 6'1 shortboard but can't surf it.
i am 5'6 about 140 lbs,
anyway been practising the shortboard pop up ALOT and can't do it on my shortboard,
i can go to the line up and sit on my board and can paddle pretty fast on it...its a tuflite.
every time i go to pop up my feet go to the side of my board like when i am sitting for a wave,
when i practise i can pop up pretty fast (on land with board in sand),
surfing conditions have been 3 maybe 4 foot max lately can't wait till winter that when best surf (ireland)
i can feel the power of the wave but when i popped up the last time i got my feet on but then the wave passed me (i guess thats a start).....?
i have a mini mal but been catching wave on it for a while now, don't wanna practise on it anymore so i gave it to my dad.......
when should i pop up on a shortboard?
p.s don't wanna hear about why i should use the mini mal
also i use ripstik can ollie and kickflip on it,
i make a indo board old skateboard deck and bottle can stay for like 10 mins at a time
also i am pretty good skateboarder like i can treflip, kickflip etc.
been using this board about 3 weeks!
Thanks! :woot:

What I can say is that your putting too much pressure on your back foot, remember, this is a shortboard and having made the transition myself lately, I can tell you that coming from a minimal is still not too easy...

The popup you do on a minimal isn't exactly the same you use on a shortboard, you can use the same but if your doing it like I was, then it's different...

Just want to know how your popping up, are you putting your hands near hips and pushing up so backs arched then kinda using your thighs as a pivot to pushup and get your ass in the air and your feet up and under your body at same time(Or landing very close to same time with feet)? (Yea I'm not too good at describing it) :blah:

It's either going to be your popup technique or your putting too much weight initially on your back foot. And yea, it is a start knowing you can get up, but also need to know what your doing wrong in order to improve. Not being mean, and sorry if it does sound that way :P I'm kinda tired/upset with no waves here at moment :(

Sounds about right with what I do if I am thinking your doing it that way... If you can try "drive" the board down the wave when you get up, I think from your response, the main area your having problems with is too much pressure on back leg causing the board to stall :)

Don't give up though! If you can get up your nearly there, just need to fine tune where you land and where your weight goes, remember it is a lot more fussy than bigger boards :P

And mine was very fussy and I'm 5'2" or so and my board around 6'3", so your board might be even more harder at your height and the boards size. Moving over is great though, I never take my other boards out if can avoid now :)

As soon as the board feels like it has no weight, so basically as soon as you have caught the wave... Timing is something you'll learn on it, but as long as you start standing, all is good and it will come with time :D

Try a couple prone so you can get the feel of when the wave puts the drive into the board.
Most beginners stand up just a tad too early. If that happens try an extra couple of paddle strokes next wave . Strangely the more the wave has caught the board the more stable it is to stand up.
Cheers enjoy the journey
