Damaged Section Board

Postby coldy13 » Sun Aug 08, 2010 7:36 pm

I can't find much of anything about the board or company other than their homepage but google doesn't translate it very good. I just learned to surf last week when I was in the Outer Banks. I rented 2 boards, the first was a 7'6" NSP which was very easy for me to stand on but when the swells got bigger it was tough for me to paddle out through the break. So I returned that one and rented a 6'8" NSP the next day and was just as comfortable standing on it and it was a bit easier for me to paddle through/over waves with. So now I'm hooked and remembered that my uncle left a surfboard in my basement(he lives in denmark, visited us and brought it with him or bought it here, don't remember). I pulled it out and wiped off the cobwebs and took some pictures of the damage. I'd like some advice on if I should use some sort of filler or sand and re-glass these areas? The anchor for the leash is broken as you can see in the pics, what is the best way to fix this? Re-glass it just like it is(but thicker), or drill a big hole and put in a metal bar like the boards I rented had?

I'm going back to the Outer Banks in september and I want to fix this board before then. I think it might be a bit too small for me, I'm 5'11" 165lb, since I'm still learning, but I'm a good snowboarder and have played soccer and other sports since I was 5, I usually pick up new things quick. I took a lesson one day and learned a lot and started catching a lot more waves instead of having them just pass me by. Would I learn more/faster if I keep using a bigger board, or if I can handle this small board should I be able to surf on anything?

Anyone know if this glass and resin will work? It's a polyester resin and mat that I'll be using for the widebody kit on my car, but I can spare a bit for the board if it's the right stuff. It's also easy to get since NAPA sells it. There's a small bit of foam missing where the tail is broken, should I fill it with bondo or some other type of filler or trim about 1" off the tail so I can glass straight over good foam?
