can i use polyester solarez on my epoxy surfboard

Postby mikan1089 » Fri Jun 25, 2010 5:27 am

Aloha Guy's

I just bought a used hand shaped epoxy surfboard. It has a couple very minor dings that are not ever close to the foam. My question is can I use polyester solarez to seal the small cracks that are not touching the foam. Or do I have to use epoxy solarez. I'm not sure if polyester resin sticks to epoxy or what. Any suggestions would be great. Aloha and mohalo

Nope you need to use the epoxy one. Polyester and epoxy do not bond but more importantly the chemicals used in polyester can have some rather "interesting" effects on eps, if this is what the board is shaped from and the resin reaches the foam.

Usually I used poly for hot coat and glossing on eps+epoxy laminated board. Bond is ok!
Only problem exist when poly touch eps foam

Interesting, why do you do this? Cover a tough epoxy board with a much more fragile hot coat? Epoxy isn't all that hard to sand.

epoxy is more expensive

hot coat and glassing don't help reinforcement

poly+wax is better in sanding and more brilliance

and, concern to flexibility....

[quote="billie_morini"]sheep boarder,
I'll throw in a couple of notes here and you can find many threads on this topic on this website. You both can and should use a 9ft fiberglass long board. Foamies are ridiculously heavy and many hundreds of thousands of people learned to surf on a fiberglass board long before foamies were invented. So, they work. One thing I don't like about foamies is the surface is soft and you don't feel the waves and board like you do with a fiberglass board. Oh, to provide additional clarity: fiberglass boards are identified by the resin used to make them. Polyester resin is more flexible than epoxy resin, but both are fiberglass. Epoxy resin takes beatings in the hands of beginners better than polyester resin. Highly experienced surfers can tell the difference and perfer the polyester resin due to its flexibilty. You will be several years, minimum, from being able to discern this.

Used boards are fine. We have 3 of them. You may find good quality used wetsuits, too. Our first two suits were used. After a few years, I bought myself two brand new suits. My wife still uses her original used suit.[/quote

Ok i agree with points 1 and 3 but persoanlly whilst yes a hot coat doesn't ad structural strength to a board it is tougher and more knock resistance than a polyester hot coat. Unless of course its a pro's board and 99% of the hot coat is sanded off anyway.

knock resistance depends by structural equation fiberglass/lamination coat, not hot coat; thickness of last is very low, I don t believe that it make plus resistance

sorry 4 my english
