Have you ever tried the cork effect

Postby khrubiche » Thu Jun 24, 2010 10:51 am

Hello ,
i've been watching the 110% surfing tehniques DVD , they're talking about what they called :" the cork effect" .
it's a technique that let u get your board speed up quickly , it's made by pulling the board towards u and get down into the water , and when the board back up to the surface ( like a cork ) lay down and start paddling .
they said that this method can help you catch wave even without paddling . :!:

is this working for you ?

Yeah.. I didnt know that's what they call it.. but yeah, I use that push start whenever I'm paddling out into a wave coming and have to flip 180 real fast, then I shove the board down and launch off, paddle couple times and hop up and go. Its a great move! Takes a while before you get the feeling of it and you can successfully launch your board and end up in the center of it. For the longest time I kept launching it too far and Id miss the wave cause I was too far back on my board, or not far enough and then just pearl.. But now I usually land the launch 90% of the time. :D

surfnoob : i think it's in the "out the back section" , i have the dvdrip , it s in the 17 minute.
boarderdave : is that move really increases the number of the waves you can catch ?

On the right kind of day, yes, definitely helps.

I don't use that move on every wave.. only when I need to flip around real quick and shoot into a wave I was otherwise unprepared for. If I see the wave coming and Im in the right position, the normal paddling is the way to go. But on a wave that is already peaking and about to pitch, when I dont have time to be paddling with the wave, the spring loaded launch allows me to catch a lot more than just normal paddling.

Yep all the time, this way you can catch waves without paddling at all. I don't use it on big waves though as you've got to get up to speed early to get onto them.

Not everybody does this though, I don't know anyone who purposely set out to learn to do this, it's generally just something you do naturally.

It does help, as BoarderDave above mentioned, to catch an unexpected wave quickly. If someone else wipes out or pulls back on a wave you can turn around quick, cork the board and get on the wave very quickly, without that technique you'd miss the wave in that fraction of a second.

Is this a short board only technique or does it work for longboards as well. Not sure if I understand but do you try to sink the board vertically and then pop it out towards the beach ?

Q. is this working for you ?
A. Yes. It's very helpful for getting my longboard moving.

Thank you for your comments. Curious as well.
I take it from the lack of posts that the folks who have posted in this thread are the only ones really interested in this, which is fair enough! Would appreciate anyone checking my new website Eric Deko

I'm really interested in this. I just couldn't seem to pull it off when I was trying. I have a friend that does it really well. When he rides his fish (retro) he seems to be able to catch almost anything with just two strokes. Maybe I'll try and work on it again.

I saw the 110% video a bit after this post and saw the section on the cork effect and i gave it a go in the water today. I think i may have been doing it unconsciously for a while now (not to the chime of well enough that i can catch a wave without paddling though :P) but i asked a guy in the water who i know to be very good and i asked him if he knew about it. He didn't actually know the name but the action, when i described it, he said he pretty much does it all the time so there is obviously a benefit to doing it.

@flo, billie answered your question but just to be doubly sure, in the actual video they show the technique on a longboard so it defo's applies ;)

Forage, you just need to practice it. It comes down to timing; just like other things you do when attempting to catch a wave. When I haven't been in the water for awhile, I have to do it 3 or 4 times to get back into the swing of it.

Shortboard yup; but I used to do it on my 9’ 0” Gun too !

CATCHING A WAVE WITHOUT PADDLING:

Impossible ?

RELATE TO “How difficult was this when you started and how easy is it now …… “

Getting your wetsuit on not back-to-front !
Learning to duck dive – can you do it now ?
Surfing a green wave – can you do it now ?
Angled takeoffs – can you do them all the time now ?
Surfing every wave you paddle for – can you do it now ?
Sit in the lineup without skyrocketing your surfboard !
Countering position drift in the lineup – can you do it now ?
Doing every move you want to on a green wave - can you do that now ?
Catch the steepest waves you ever have all the time – can you ?
Sitting at the peak point, spinning the board 180 instantly in a ½ a second decision to catch ? One stroke to catch the wave and succeed – have you ever ?
Now you might try a deeper ‘no-paddle’ pop up - it really is awesome !

Let us know – we’ll be most please for you ! – Good effort !

Don’t drop in though; But hey – you’d be soooooo deep you really would have absolute wave priority !

It ain’t easy until it ‘clicks’ so have fun and be cautious!
