Soft rack or a hard rack?

If you can get it, I'd vote for a hard rack. Much more stable.

I'd check a sporting goods store.. Sport Chalet, Sport Authority, Big 5, Dicks Sporting Goods, etc. They usually sell good Thule or Yakima hard rack setups and they can help you find the right size and get all the good equipment for it.

They usually start at around $250 or so and go up from there from what I have seen.

Good luck. :D

Soft racks strap on the top and then run inside the car and tie above your head. So they can be removed easily and what not. Hard racks are secured to your roof.

What type of vehicle do you drive?

Soft racks do this:

Hard racks actually mount onto the roof of the car and are secured either in the rails, or with a clamp down (depending on what type of car you have). Like the car on the right in this shot:

Okay, well, Google Thule or Yakima (two brands that make good quality hard racks) and I believe on their site you can put in your car info and see if they make any setups for you. :D

If for some odd reason they do not.. you can get those soft racks at basically any surf shop. Pretty cheap too. :D Good luck!

BoarderDave is right, I would recommend a hard rack. But if you do decide to get a soft rack, make sure you take it off of your car when you know it's gonna rain. If you don't, the straps will absorb the rainwater and get it inside your car and make the car smell horrible. My brother forgot to remind me about that when I first started surfing.
