Getting back on the board

Postby oceanspeed » Sat Jun 05, 2010 12:11 pm

After a 2 years break from surfing due to work Im sat here with the sun beating down in West Wales thinking that it's a good time to get back into the sea and get wet.

Problem is that I lost my board (long story, basically nicked) and I can't remember what size was ideal for me. All I remember is that it was from a surf shop down the road from me and when I had it, I was thinking about getting something beter than a surf shop learner board.

I know theres a lot of seasoned surfers and this is a first time post but some advice would be well apprecaited.

Cheers

Whats your details?? How big are you? Weight, height..? What kind of break are you going to be surfing? Is it a slow mushy crumbly wave? A fast peaky wave?

Generally.. fairly new back into it.. if you can get away with it.. maybe like a 7-8 footer funboard or something that can be used in many locations and even on smaller days.

When you get back into the swing of things and want to flip some turns and stuff, pick up a shorter setup and go at it. :D

I thought id missed out some basics when I did the post ,sorry about that. Im weighing in these days at abotu 12 stone and height is about 5'6

Wave type im not overly sure, its Newgale beach that I surf at here in wales so Ill go do some research on what its classed as. At least its helped with one thing that a 6ft board would be too small :D

at 5'6.. Yeah I would reccomend at least a 6'8"+ (and that would be if you have previous skill level where you are comfortable enough to pop up and ride and turn a short board). If you've only been on a longboard or anything like that.. my reccomendation would be a 7'-8' funboard. Something kinda wide and thick.. floats well and can stay balanced. :D

From what little I can remember I was popping up fairly regularly but it was getting out back that was killing me most of the time, despite being semi fit back then! I've not tried the turning stuff but have managed to go along the wave a little rather than jsut down to the sand :-(
