Want to learn how to surf, need advice (LBI)

Postby Summer Yellow » Sun Jun 06, 2010 3:49 pm

LBI: Long Beach Island.
So I've been wanting to surf for the longest time, but, I'm worried about my weight. I weigh at 147 pounds and have a height of 5.7. I've been dieting for the past month, have been practicing pop-ups in my room and been swimming actively since I was six-years-old. I have also been in the ocean too many times to count.
Locally I live not to far from Cocoa Beach, but I'm up here visiting a relative. Soon I'm going to get lessons, either next week or the week after.
To get straight to the point:
Will my weight effect me much? I know that actually practicing out in the water will help a ton, but should I be alright on a surfboard learning?

Weight doesnt matter too much get a board with some float, its more about technique and fitness.

Ha! I'm 5'9", was about 200lbs when I started, am about 185lbs now. Started with an 8'6" funshape, had no problem catching waves and standing up. I was always strong, but I did have to build up some endurance.

I think you'll be fine, unless you are completely out of shape.

Your weight to height ratio is fine. I'm 5'8" and weigh 165 lb. These were my stats when I learned to surf. Sometimes my weight goes up a little, but never below 165. You will be fine. Now, get in the water!
