Renting boards in spain

How skepical are hire shops (presuming there are hire shops) in spain about renting boards to abosolute novices, and could anyone reccomend any places with big ass waves (Spain Canaries Portugal)

I am with a couple of friends going on a holiday- we are strapped for cash so the place would have to have campsites, or can you just pitch a tent most places in spain?

also we can't afford lessons, and a friend who has had a couple months surfin' experience assures me he can teach me as well as any school (He's pretty xxxxx but it's the only option)- Is it more just a case of practising on waves than having lessons?

also, has anyone a ballpark figure on how much renting a board for a day costs?

Yes you can hire surfboards in Spain. Best places for surfing are Bask country and Asturias. But you will find more surf shops in Bask country : Bilbao, San Sebastian, Sopelana.
Price will be around 15 to 25 euros a day, less if longer hire.
You can have pretty good big waves in Mundaka, but the locals are hot and athmosphere not really peaceful. Be aware.

cheapest place i found in northern spain was this youth hostel called Loredo in cantabria spain, it was about 6 euros the night and it was at 100 meters from the beach, on the other side it's playa de somo a known place at both places you can get rentals for 15 euros the day, you can also camp at this hostel, it's really nice, ther's a big kitchen area for everyone to use

There is a town called Tapia located on the western coast of Asturias where you can camp on the beach and hire surfboards. The locals are friendly.
