cross stepping questions

Postby paulyoffshore » Tue Jan 19, 2010 8:22 pm

Hello out there. After popping up I'm starting to experiment w/ cross stepping on my 9 footer. After just shuffleing my feet for a while what I try to do now is, From centered standing position, starting with my front foot ,step back and place foot just on the rear side of my back foot, then step the back foot about shoulder width back from there. What I'm trying to figure out is when taking the first step back, do I cross in front of my back foot or behind it. And when moving forward again do you simply reverse the order or does it matter? Does the leash factor in somehow? if there is an " order of procedure," please let me know or maybe a how to video out there.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

To start with practice on land!

Waiting for a bus or train or something? Find a nice line and practice cross-stepping!

At home pop a 9' long 2"-3" rail in the yard and practice on that from time to time. You can also get a longboard skateboard and practice a couple cross-steps on that.

Keep all that up whenever because it's good practice.

It's also worth just practicing cross-stepping without worrying about going across the face.

The more you practice the easier you'll find it comes to you when you are surfing in earnest.

That would be Mr Joel Tudor.

Other good stylists are Belinda Baggs, Dan Peterson, Kassai Meador... And more :-D

As usual it all depends on what you are looking for :) And I'm not at home so I am purely going form memory here. I have just a few surf DVDs ;)

Since we are talking crossstepping...
  • Trilogy of style - great value as it's three mostly noseriding/crossstepping movies in one.
  • Longer - If you want Joel Tudor you'll want this.
  • Wordz - Lotsa noseriding and crossstepping in this one.
  • Singlefin Yellow - One beautiful longboard travels around the world.
  • Hang - tho it tends to be more progressive than noseriding oriented.
  • The Seedling - Some excellent crossstepping and noseriding here but some other retro too.
  • Sprout - Sequel to The Seedling and more diverse but still some good crossstepping.
  • Fin - A bit more eclectic than Sprout. A few LB segments.

I haven't seen these yet but am hankering to get hold of them!
  • The Walkabout - suppost to be the best instructional LB DVD there is.
  • Style Mongrels - Chris Klopf takes some of the worlds best longboarders around the world
  • Home - Longboarding down Australia's east coast with some of the LB world champs.

I think all of these are listed at http://www.actionsportsvideos.com/longboard.html and more besides.
