Sufing Puerto Rico

Me and a buddy are taking a trip to san juan puerto rico in march. I was wondering if anyone can give me any info on how to get to the different breaks. What different breaks are around that area. Mellow breaks, beach breaks, reef breaks etc. We will be renting a car and staying in san juan. any info would help. Thanks

Oh boy...don't mind helping you but that's a lot of info. I've been living here in Rincon for a few months now through April.Surfing San Juan is alright...there are a few descent breaks. The most popular is a longboard wave called La Ocho. On a good day its a long mellow ride, but again, only via longboard. Caballos and la Punta are also popular breaks. I would recommend actually coming over here to the west side of the island for some real swell. Rincon, Aguadilla, and Isabela all get more consistent and bigger waves. It's about a 2 hour drive without traffic from SJ but it's definitely worth it. If you do, check out Middles, Surfer's, and Wilderness in Isabella and Aguadilla, and Maria's or Domes down here in Rincon. Need more info you can pm me, good luck!

Hey there, I just came back from Puerto Rico a week ago and I had a blast. Probably the best surfing trip I have ever had. Food was awesome, the people in the water were cool but I was with a local all the time so they were lenient towards me. I booked Private Surfing Tours with a guy that was recommended to me by one of my best friends. My friend visits Puerto Rico like three times a year and everytime he goes he books this guy. <url removed>

I used him while I was there for a 5 day package and the guy knows his stuff. Really friendly, honest and highly skilled. He has a good vibe all the time and makes you feel like you are part of the place and not visiting.

Anyways I surfed a bunch of secret spots with him and a few known spots. I would not recommend renting a vehicle in Puerto Rico and driving it yourself as you will probably get :

1. Mugged
2. Broken window ( which will end up costing you a ton when you take your vehicle back)
3. Flat tire ( for pissing someone off in the water )
4. Your crap stolen out of the vehicle
5. anything else really

I had heard that if you go with a local none of this happens and nothing did. We went, we surfed, we went home safe.

Try the guy out he is not cheap but if you ask me he is worth every penny and then some.

Haha I've been living here in Rincon (and renting a car) for 3 months and have NOT been:

1. Mugged
2. Had a broken window
3. any crap stolen
4. anything else??? That's like saying when you go somewhere something will happen...it doesn't mean anything

I did have a flat tire but that was from driving off road. I'm glad you had a great trip but don't be a fear mongerer, almost every Puerto Rican i've met has been extremely stoked I was there surfing with them. Show respect and it doesn't matter if your a Gringo or not. Being mugged or whatever could happen everywhere so you should check your sources about all these things happening. I haven't heard anyone have a problem down here.
