waikiki beach questions

Postby Deepwaterdesigns » Tue Feb 09, 2010 8:46 pm

hey guys,
so im heading to oahu in a few weeks and staying right on waikiki beach. i know its a very crowded beach, and loads of begginers but i want to make the most of my time there and atleast get a couple hours each day of surf. i cant go far because my girlfriend will want to do things during the day (tho we are making a pilgramage to the north shore) so a quick session in the morning before she gets up would be awesome.
my questions are

1. are there actually any fun waves at waikiki for an intermediate level surfer?
2. ive only seen pics of people on longboards there, would i be ok on a fish? even a bigger fish like a 7s superfish?
3. are there areas of the beach with less begginers around?

i would appreciate any info, from tourists or locals, whoever!
thanks

1. Yes, plenty of fun waves!
2. Yes, a fish will work just fine.
3. Look for a peak you like and get on it, try not to worry about what level other surfers might be, be humble, be gracious & have a blast!

I surfed a spot called 3's straight out from Lewers St. in the Summer. It was pumping the whole 2 weeks we were there. Def. good for short board. Don't know about this time of year though. It's right where the catamoran launches from.

Deepwaterdesings,
if you normally surf where the water is cold, you will really enjoy the water in Hawaii.

i looked on the surf report today and it says its at 3.5 ft, im guessing thats good for waikiki, so stoked, have been watching surf vids all day getting exited about it. im sure ill have fun no matter what, but i think im most exited about getting my GF really into surfing, shes done a few sessions now and can catch a wave and stand for a few secs, i think waikiki will be the perfect place for her to progress .

You got the right idea on everything. A fish will be fine and so will a longboard. One thing...please teach your gf some of the water rules prior to paddling out. More than anything, we hate when tourist paddle out and dont know any of the surfing etiquet., if anything be somewhat on the passive side to taking waves and you will see the aloha spread quick to you and your girlfriend.
