I am a lone wanna be surfer...
no one i know surf, and though one friend of mine wants to start, i dont think he will be able to go to the beach with me for now...

i learnt to skateboard more or less on my own, and it is not the funniest thing, but if i went to a place where there were other skaters they were all nice, and would talk to me you about general stuff and help and all, isn't it like that on the surf?

i hope it is, cause i will probably be going alone to the beach to surf very often...

yeh i think surfers are a friendly bunch. the things is though, being a girl, and most other surfers being male, if i try to talk to them it seems like i'm trying to chat them up and i'm not!!!!i just wanna be friends :'( lol. trying to ask someone how often they go there without it sounding like a cheesy chat up line... can be a problem, hehe.

i think that surfing on your own is a large part of the enjoyment. Its good to get away from everything and everyone even better if your the only one out you get all the best waves.
Its nice to have a few buddies to chat to now and then but i always find that you and your mates just go off and do your own thing anyway in the water.

I surf on my own as there don't tend to e many surfers in warrington that I know of. I don't really mind but I suppose it would be good (and probably safer) to surf with someone.

Hey, glad to see you got yourself hooked up welsh freaky_welsh_chick. I've got the same problem, I haven't got into the water yet round here cos more than anything I don't like the idea of surfing at a beach for the first time on my own if i don't know it that well. And I'm still in the process of finding/buying a board. I'll get it sorted soon though.

ight, I know whatcha ya'll mean about the chick thing. I suppose I am a lone surfer most the time, but like when back home there is a group of regulars that always meet up there, we watch eachothers backs and go out sometimes. Now I started surfing at 7 and that was funny no that I look at it. This 7 year old chick with like really hot high school and college dudes. Some of them "adopted me" and like watched my back and most were just like what is this kid doing out here. But then those same guys after a while were the ones that were asking me for advice like years later but still. The home group becomes like a tight knit family. I would do anything for my brahs and ditto. Now there are like 3 girls when I am back home but still I am the orig sistah! SO just go out have guts and surf and dominate! They will start showing respect, just don't act all damsel in destress those are the girls that don't last because no one will help them. Later.

i reckon surfing solo is all good cos you are totally "in the zone" and out there to escape everything (everyone) else. personally i surf alone most of the time but i always talk to the fellas surfing near me and occasionally blackmail some of my female work mates into coming out when the waves are nice. all the surfers i've met at my beach are totally friendly and easy to talk to (although as freaky welsh chick mentions, they sometimes tend to think you're hitting on them just cos you're a girl..)
i surf better anyway if i'm not with one of my mates as i'm less worried about making a dick of myself and wiping out.

As a surfer of some 16 years, I find it better to paddle out with friends.

Surfing alone does put you 'in the zone' but you can't beat paddling back out to the lineup and share your stoke with your close friends.

Also, it's awesome to watch your best mate flying towards you in the tube as you paddle over the shoulder.

I give maximum respect to anyone who is out there trying it. I'll talk to anyone and offer any advice I can. I've helped perfect strangers get out back. I just think that surfing is one of the best things you can do, so anyone who is prepared to give it a go, deserves a little respect.

At the end of the day, I don't laugh at people for wiping out - we've all been there and Surfing shouldn't be about what you look like, but about how much fun you are having, so don't worry about looking stupid in front of your friends, if they're your friends they may laugh, but they won't mean it.

Just get out there and have fun.

actually i'm not too worried if my mates laugh at me for wiping out, cos thats simply a fairly large part of the deal for me still, and besides they wipe out just as bad as me! but surfing alone i am simply more chilled and focused. but i agree its good to surf with someone accasionally. i've started meeting up with some of the fellas from my beach, as obviously we already have something intrinically important in common. most people i've met have been like you sinista, totally sweet, encouraging me and giving me heaps of advise, i think i probably meet more people when i go out alone as i'm more likely to talk to whoever is around me on the beach. :)

Yeah, I'm doing the loner thing, starting any day now. Board just arrived this morning... :D Gonna get myself out there this week or next. As soon as I have the time spare. Can't wait. :P Got to the stage where I don't care if I'm on my own. It's a great feeling and I'm sure you bump into people often enough to get to know a few regulars.

As for the guys thinking you're chatting them up. I wouldn't worry about that, if it comes to it all you have to do is be straight-up with them and then they should be cool. The majority of my mates are guys and sometimes you do have to make clear that you don't think of them as anything more than a mate. Just depends on how comfortable you are around guys I guess. If you're happy to get chatting to a guy and you're not chatting them up then whatever they think at first is up to them really. Anyway, enough of that, I'm starting to sound like a "dear deidre" column or something.

surfing with mates

Postby surf patrol » Wed Mar 31, 2004 1:03 pm

I agree with Sinista, surfing with your mates is the best. Although I am doing the lone surfer thing at the moment (new to town, crowded surf) and reckon you cannot beat surfing with your mates. If the waves are smallish you can have a real laugh messing around and if it is big you can push each other and get the most out of the session. Even if you go out with your mates you can still go off on your own and do your own thing.

True, but you have to be careful when messing about like that.

I pushed my mate off once and as he fell his board flew forward and the nose smashed a hole the size of my fist into the rail of my board.

Now he's got a longboard, so we go for the classic, jumping on the back of his board gag.

We usually end up surfing alone though, cos he prefers lefts and I prefer rights, so we end up on completely different peaks!!

LOL!!

Ai ight ya I like to paddle out with my brahs and whatever but not catch waves with them, too much chance to get hurt. Um but it is nice to have someone you know and trust out there in the water with you for laughs and well for saftey. Because if something does happen to ya in the big blue then they are the ones able to help. Unless I am just in a pissed off mood I always paddle out with friends. It is more fun because then you can totally hard core rase them.
