FCS H2 fins?!

Postby james_swimmer » Fri Oct 23, 2009 8:09 am

Hi all,

Has anybody tried the H2 fins?

FCS give them lots of hype but they're a very different shape to any others in the FCS range.

Also any other recomendations for a medium sized surfer 10.5 stone (147lbs) on a Sam Egan 6'0 swallow tail resin8, surfed in british conditions (ranging from crappy 1-2ft mush, to the nice clean 6-7ft surf i sneaked in on wednesday at fistral...)

Its got the standard plastic fcs fins that came with the board, thought it was time for a re-vamp.

Thanks for your help

HI James
A friend of mine was making those shaped fins ten+ years ago and now all the guys who ride his boards swear by them. I have had a go myself and they really fly. If you surf south fistral often you may well have seen some of the local guys on phd boards with these fins, they really do go.
Unfortunately the guy who makes them states that they alter the lift of the tail of the board so simply slinging them on any board is futile, the whole rear end must be shaped with the alternate fin in mind. Love or hate the guy in question he really does know his stuff and I know he has experimented with them in a variety of scenarios.
Ever seen a pro on these FCS H2 fins? Neither have I, could be a costly experiment.

I would suggest sticking to something that has had a lot more water time behind the concept. FCS fancy range of pc 3/ pc5 would make a nice upgrade, double foil with that tasty hexalite gear in the middle. <edit>
Cheers.

Hey dude, H-2s are awesome...sometimes on sale for about £60... but have you thought about the K-3 performance glass fins? If you want to spend and get some top quality fins those could be good?

Otherwise some M-5s always do the job for surfers of your size. I just can't believe how many fins FCS produce! crazy...

Bringing back this post because I bought a set of H2 fins.

I had previously tried them and sold them, at the time it was on a 6'1 shortboard that, for my 205lb size, was my smallest. They rode good but it felt like the board tipped back and forth on the turns, like I was on a balance down the center of the board and every turn would cause it to tilt.

However, I did not try them on any of my other boards, a rookie mistake. I recently got a used pair and tried them on my step up, and boy do I like them! I don't know how to explain it, it just felt like it turned and grabbed the wave face better than my other fins. The only exception was when I sent over the falls, I tried to save it by going down the wave and turning, it didn't turn, like it knew it was a bs move by me. I dig em now!

Reporting back:

Well, the H2's are not my preferred set up. I dig then in shoulder to head high walls, but anything else. Hit it on a big mushy day, felt like I could not snap back easily enough. On a big barreling day I found they where not easy to get into the waves as I thought, and once in the curl it just felt like I was making more corrections than cutbacks, kinda threw me off.

Anyway, maybe I am just used to other fins. I might try them in my quad set up.
