traction pad adhesive

Postby sussle » Sun Oct 11, 2009 10:21 pm

hey all - i recently put a new traction pad on my stick, only to find it peeling off after 3 or 4 sessions. can anyone suggest an adhesive, like the 3m PSA that the traction pad manufacturers use, to reglue it - something that i might find at my local Lowes or Home Depot? i'd rather not have to buy a new pad, but i want to be sure to only put on an adhesive that will come off as needed in the future.

thanks in advance! :)

i just put the pad back on with 3M adhesive spray, but if that doesn't hold, i'll give the tape a try - thanks!

Years ago when I was unemployed my shaper showed me a way of saving a few quid by recycling deckgrips( I was going through 2-3 boards a year!) and the tip may help you. if its come off its because you didnt clean the board properly i suspect and/or didnt give it enough pressure.

Tip. Take a hair dryer and gently heat up the tailpad, as the glue gets soft you can slowly and in a controlled fashion remove the deckgrip. Clean your board properly with wax pickle. Do not use turps ,acetone or such like a this will remove your speedcoat. use 3m spray adhesive only. Everything else is crap!

Before putting on a deckgrip I always mildly key the surface with with some 400 wet and dry. when its all dry and clean with a nice subtly abrased surface, spray both the pad and the board and when you stick it down spend 20 minutes squeezing all the air out and giving it loads of pressure ( middle outwards). If you do every stage properly you should e fine.
Whatever you do, do not try and refix the old deckgrip will nilly, get it off and start again, that way you know it is all dry clean ect etc.
Hope That helps.
Cheers.

^ I plonked some grips on my 'board - but spent all afternoon pouring near boiling water over it to wash all the crud off - grips are still on and working 20 years later ! (see avatar !).

(I aspire to achieve this longevity in my current personally made custom carbon and plain board quiver!)
