I wouldn't put shampoo in your hair before surfing. Most shampoos contain harmful chemicals that shouldn't be added directly to lakes, rivers or oceans (sodium lauryl sulfate in particular comes to mind) as they are toxic to plant and marine life. There are some eco-friendly lines that are a bit better (although I have no clue about UK brands) -- look for ones that say they are biodegradable.

But then again, are you really going to spend your surfing time sudsing up your hair? What about investing in a weekly deep conditioning treatment instead?

RJD should be able to help you, he spends a lot of time on his hair.

If anything, you may be shampooing too much, especially if there are sulfates in the brand you use. Rinse your hair out well after a surf, try to find a shampoo with no sulfates, and use it 2-4 times a week, depending on what works for you.

Once I stopped shampooing my hair every day (I just rinse most days), it's much less dry and frizzy, and isn't oily or greasy either. My hair is short, somewhat curly, and thick, so it was a mess when too dry. It's much better now.

I'm not feeling very masculine after this post for some reason!

Most women I know comb conditioner into their hair before surfing and diving. I've seen this recommended in surfers' guides for women, too.

I use conditioner in my hair in the water and it works a treat! just use a product from your local health food store which is free from nasty chemicals..... Green People are quite good...

I ain’t gonna bother - if you don't have hair you don't have to spend loads on haircuts, conditioner, shampoo, getting to and fro the hairdressers.

I always had a haircut every fortnight, washed it, conditioned it and this was when I worked in a research laboratory too - and it still fell out !

Sommit up somewhere but hey – I’m gonna save over £16k to the day I die by not having hair and that is a load of surfboards !

Me happy so all is well.
