I just bought my 1st board today im 5'11 66.5kg and had about 14 hours of surfing so far on a 8ft swell 'foamie' lol :? ,

bought a new Glen D'arcy 7'6 mini mal with bag leish fins wax for £380 all in, not sure if thats going price or not but was sick of searching for a board so just went for it in the end... Guy in shop seemed canny enough.

Havent had opportunity to use it just yet but hoping to try it out for 1st time next weekend. Ive been rapidly improving at popping up on them big clumsy foamies so far but reckon the 1st few times surfing on a glass board might present a few frustrating and possibly painful wipeouts or whatever it is you real surfer dudes call them lol

Chriss ---------------------- We had the exact same first board!!!!

Also a strange coincidence, I took it out to have a go on last week for the first tme in over a year ( I VERY quickly graduated onto full on longboarding after trying another surfers magic carpet)

My god it (or I) was xxxxx , like total CRAP.....Im gettingalong reasonably well with my 9.2 and 9.6 boards , I love them both and can change between them for differant feels.but stepping back to the 8 ft..........god it feels like it wants to atually b upside down in the water.........i could hardly sit on it!!!

was keeping it around with the idea of returning to it, but now..its off on the ebay!!!

sadest part is at £230 it was my most expensive board my beautiful log came in at £130 !!! and the big boy 9.6 at a mere £180 both off ebay....look around folks if you in the market theres some steals to be had, paticularly out of season!!!

My first custom board was a Glen D'arcy Jeffreys Bay Surfboards 6'6", bought about 1987 from a little surf shop near Porthcawl. It had a proper 80's design, mad colours, flames etc etc. Had a few years on a freeride popout before that, but I like to consign those memories to the same place as the bad haircuts and loud sweaters that I also had in the mid 1980's....

I sold it to a mate, and I hear he still has it. I'm going to the UK next year, so might see if he wants to sell it back to me. It would be quite funny to get to surf it again 20 years later.

Think I've been through about 20 boards since I bought that one.

tried the new board out, took a while to get used to standing up on a glass board but got there in the end, think mini mals are ideal boards for 1st time buyers.. cant wait to get back in the water with it. While on the subject of being in the water... if anyone surfs in cold water conditions as a new surfer look up "surfers ear" worth taking precautions against it if u havent already.

I bought my new board about 5 days after Liquidmetalman because he made me lol and im glad i did, cost me around £340 for the board (New) with a 6ft leash and a block of sex wax. My board is a 8ft Southern Swell Mini Mal, im 6ft 2 roughly and weigh around 11 stone, the board was easy to get used to and was pritty much instant as there was no size change from the previous board i used and I was able to stand on it first go without any problems.

7'9 bic (still have it) was great to learn on.
9'4 naish longboard (still have it) even better to learn on and even better to wreck heads with on small days its super thick and goes on pure unbroken swell.
7' spider loose evo (still have it) tho its a bibt like trigger's brush from only fools and horses 14 handles and 7 heads. all the fin plugs have been replaced and doubt there's an original pieace of glass on it anywhere.
6'8 bilt fatboy swallow tail (still have it) - great for learning reo's, cutbacks as its super loose but gets me in early
6'4 tom dodge DH squash tail (only had it a couple of months) - great for down the line speed and refining the turns i learned on the 6'8

mine was a 7'6 hawaiian soul fiberglass mini-mal squash tail with a wood finish on the deck, it was nice and light and rode very smoothly, picks up in almost anything and i still ride it to this day as my go to small wave board.

A Circle one - 7.3 mini-mal which I still use sometimes today. I stopped getting it fixed though.

6'10" cutloose thruster. Thick as anything for about £75. Went to a 6'3" quad. Still my favourite board! Now on a 5'7" and struggling to pop up. Fast as anything once your there but it's a miracle to stand.

8' Liquid Shredder foam board. I am 6'2", 185lbs and the board was very easy to ride. Getting up was no problem, turning was more of an issue for me but probably because I was a beginner and not because of the board. I had a bit of trouble switching to a fiberglass board after because it just felt so different then the foam.

an 8ft foamie was my first board. It gave me the confidence to learn, knowing that if it landed on my head it wouldn't be too painful! I was always a bit worried I was a total weakling though; I could never seem to paddle as fast or as long as my buddies on their fiberglass boards, and used to miss a lot of waves cos I simply couldn't get any kind of speed up. I got pretty bored of my foamie within about 6 months though and I just got a 7'4" custom funboard. It turns out all that time spent paddling that heavy foamie actually built my paddling muscles up without me even realising. Now I can glide onto green waves with just a few strokes and I am loving every minute of it!!

I reckon if I'd gone straight to fiberglass I would have missed out on some important strength and stamina building, so I'm glad I got the foamie first. And fortunately it was also indestructable as I was bumping it on the way out of the garden gate and man-handling it in and out of my car etc... :-D
