Airlines Surfboard Charges vs. Renting

Postby SurfCamera » Sat Oct 24, 2009 9:04 pm

I tried renting last time at the North Shore. Spent half a day and found nothing but junk.
Anybody have any good ideas on getting around surfboard baggage charges. I'll be flying from San Diego to Oahu.
I flew to Australia last month on Virgin Airlines. TWO surfboards for FREE!
Bummer they don't fly to Hawaii. Delta is $175.00 each way... per board!

As for Europe, i've had a really bad experience with Iberia they seem to have a problem with surfers, i payed 150 euros for one way and they lost my surfboard in Madrid lol so i waited 2 days to get it and ofcourse it was dented, so they're definately Black-Listed... I know Lufthansa doesn't transport surfboards at all. But other providers aren't that problematic, for example TAP (which is Portuguese company) charges bout 40-50 euros for one way and the rest aprox the same.

Do your best acting bit. A little drama and sobbing at the ticket counter has worked for me more than a few times. Especially on the return flight. I've always avoided renting boards because of the obvious reasons. Hey if you ever think about Nicaragua, check us out at GreenSurf Nicaragua on FB and greensurfnicaragua.com will be up soon too. We'll have a full-time shaper and full quiver of free, yes free board rentals for our guests. Just a perk of choosing our tours. Peace!
