Ordered New Fish...that isn't

Postby IB_Surfer » Sat May 09, 2009 4:31 am

My buddy Tim fell in love with my half moon quad fish, and it was my go-to board before I got my carbon fiber. It was shaped after the Xanady Rocky as an all purpose board and in works in most conditions, but since I have so many boards, specific to conditions, I stopped using it as much. So I sold it to him and decided to have another one made but more fishy.

This one the nose will be wider and thicker and the tail will be rounder and wider on the back with the half moon a lot smaller. Think of it as a hybrid between the Xanadu Rocky and the Lost Monkfish with a half moon in back, and the thickness, width and rocker of a classic fish. I think the last iteration was higher performance but I'm hoping it will be more of a wave hog while also being smaller, just in time for summer.

For sure it will look cool. Lets see. I'll post up picks later.

Man you go through some boards, must be fun. How did you like the half moon tail? I was debating going with a bat tail or half moon on mine. Ive mostly surfed swallows.

I go through boards, but I always sell one before buying one, so don't feel it much. It has allowed me to dabble with different designs, kinda fun.

The thought behind original twin fin fishes came from pintail designs, the side against the face along with the point on the swallow tail acts like a small gun, which is why they are wider in back to make the line straighter. The v in the swallow is supposed to make the board turn without diging the tail for faster turns without stalling but also wider since the board stays flatter. The newer designs dig in a little better so not so wide a turn as the retro's, at the expense of a little of that fun turning speed.

Now, for the real reason why I got the half moon: it allowed the tail to be wider while still retaining a shortboard feel, and it looks cooler than a swallow tail. What can I say, I like cool looking sticks...

Got it from the shaper today and tried it right away. Mid afternoon chopy crumbling 2ft mush, and it was a blast, it has a bunch of glide.

6'1" x 20 3/4 x 2 3/4" - gonna be my summer fish, if you can call it that, I think it looks more like a torpedo

looks cool, i'd like to see how it compares to a retro twinnie. i'm obsessed with riding my fish since i got it and love the way it rides in any waves but particularly clean 3ft or so and hollow can be amazing fun too.

Update: so now I got to really try it the whole week, in good surf and small surf. A little slugish, but a definite wave catcher.

If I had to do it again I would have gone 2 5/8 thick or 2 1/2, but I totally dig the template.

liking the graphics too. Moon tales are kinda like the same idea as a swallow / bat tail. Any input on how far it differs?

The moon tail makes it feel more like a shortboard, it cuts back a little easier than a swallow tail in my oppinion, but the swallow is a lot more stable.

for performance i would recommend a fish with a short board nose. Not sure what they call em but the one i have is allows me to whip my turns alot quicker than tradition fish shapes with more width and thickness through the nose. Removing foam through the nose will give the board a lighter feel through your turns. Also consider tweaking the tail rocker slightly to allow faster pivioting through your turns. Im about to make a fish which is less of a high performance fish and more of a super fun down the line speed board 8) see how it goes :)

Funny, that's the board I sold to get this one, a Xanadu Rocky replica, thinner nose and more tail rocker than a fish. It came out like a glidy shortboard but started using my shortboards more and it became obsolete. I want to keep the rocker flat and the nose fat so I can keep it small and easy to paddle, but having an extra quarter inch less foam and lighter epoxy matterials should give me the the same glide with better performance.
