While you surf...?

Postby Rogue_Shadow » Mon Jul 13, 2009 3:30 pm

Hey Guys

Justa quick question, where do you guys put your car keys and such when you go surfing? At the moment im just renting a board from my local surf shop so i change and keep my gear locked up in the shop. But what do you other guys n girls do?
If you drive to your local beach I guess you keep your wallet and such in your car, but what about the keys?

Most probabily a stupid question... :roll: but i thought id ask anyway :lol:

There are normally key pockets -
* in your wetsuit.
* in your leash.
So a single key comes out surfing, everything else in the car.

Awww right, But what about the remote key remotes, surely the sea water screws them up?
Thanks for the reply

Get a metal copy made and take that out with you - you'll be able to get into the car, but you'll probably set the alarm off.
Serves you right for having a posh car :wink:

agree its best to get a key cut without all the electronics. there will be a key pocket either in your wetsuit or suit. at very low key spots i sometimes used to hide my key somewhere in the undergrowth in a wall or something. this is very risky and i would only do it at spots where id be fairly confident there would be nobody around. there used to be a company who made a rash vest with a waterproof pocket built in. i think it was called bubblelock or something similar.with one of these you could keep your key in there. not sure if they still make them though.

when ive forgotten my non-electronic key (shamefully frequently) I have wrapped it in the cling film from my just eaten sandwiches and stuffed it into the key pocket in my wettie - didnt think it would work but kept it dry enough. or hid it under a nearby rock. Only a last resort mind!

It's risky but they make magnetic key cases that you can stick somewhere on the underside of your car. I wouldn't suggest putting it under the wheel well though because that's usually the first place a thief would look. The best thing for you to do has already been said, make a non electronic copy. Luckily my car clicker isn't attatched to me key, so I can take the clicker off my key ring, leave it in the car, and just bring the key in my board shorts pocket. :mrgreen:

Sometimes I carry a small 6-pack sized Playmate cooler to the beach (with a bottle of water, sunscreen and maybe a sandwich or snack bar in it. I usually leave my keys in the cooler with my cell phone as well.

If I carry my board to the beach in my boardbag, I put it all inside the bag so no one can see my belongings. The place I surf at has no incidents of theft that I'm aware of so everyone keeps an eye on everyone elses stuff and watches any "mysterious people" whom may be snooping around our stuff on the beach.

I wear the key around my neck on a thick shoe lace.

Does your saxo have a key and a seperate fob with the buttons on it?

I've got one like that and I take off the fob and leave it in the car and use the key to manually lock the doors. I've never had a problem keeping the key in my wetsuit. It doesn't really have any active electronics in it like the fob has (just the immobiliser bit).

Otherwise, as was said above, you'd be alright wrapping it in clingflim. My friend does that and we've never been stranded cold and wet outside the car. Maybe leave a thermos of tea under the car just in case though. As long as there's tea, it'll all be ok.

Each car should have a second key which is usually not electronic. At least all of our cars have them.. If not, maybe look for some waterproof key-container.

Call your local deal for a "valet" key, it opens the door but does not turn the ignition. The one for my caddie was $25
