Suggestions needed for new Longboard Fin.

Postby Jack2007 » Sun Jul 05, 2009 8:33 pm

Hi,

I have a 9'2 longboad with plenty of volume as I am 16 stone. It is currently in the process of being changed from a thruster set-up to a box fin + side plugs.
I am having it changed as I belive I should be able to ride it single fin and with the thruster it seems to have too much drag.

I would like to know what peoples suggestions are on what longboard fin to buy and what size.

I need it to have quite a lot of drive and a good all rounder.

I have been told the Fatboy and Hatchet are good but what size?

thanks in advance.

My two cents:
1) as a dedicated single fin, 9.5in
2) as a 2+1, 8in

There are other factors, like rake (the distance the fin tip curves away from the base), More rake gives more drive, but creates a stiffer feel.
As for materials, I would say the traditional fiberglass fin is best, although plastic side-bites are fine.
Im not familiar with the brands you mentioned, but Im sure they have something in this range.

I ride a classic Jimmy Lewis polyurethane (I think) fin - from off the wall and into the sand surf sizes it had been solid and reliable - nothing fancy, it just sticks in the water and goes where you want it to !
Recommended
Go to the Jimmy Lewis website (nothing to do with me !) and ask - you should fare well - especially as a local pro [Chris Gutts Griffiths who won the European pro tour in both 97 and 99 and had a top 5 year end ranking in the ASP in 96] has now taken Jimmy Lewis SUP’s into his stable !

i would say try a 9 inch turbo tunnel fin.... it has brought my beginner surfing on a lot, it has so much more hold and lets be make the drop in a lot less out of control way...dont even know if its meant to have these properties, but thas what i have found.

on my 9 footer i took off the side bites and ride only a, 9" George Greenough 4A. it's got a wide base and long rake. it provides good drive and is just loose enough to be fun yet it stays locked in while turning. i've been happy ever since.
