Changing Thruster plugs to fin box?

Postby Jack2007 » Thu Jun 25, 2009 1:53 pm

Hi,

I have a 9'2 longboard with a thruster set-up. I would like to be able to change the set-up to a single fin but I cant as the longboard fins only come in the box type conector. Anyone have any ideas on how to get around the problem?

How much hassle is it to change the centre fin plugs to a fin box?

Or, how much time, money is it to get the shop to do it

Thanks

umm you can buy longboard fins in almost any style connector i.e fcs plugs????

To change the fin box would be madness as that would involve drilling out the plugs and then routing in a fin box. I think i have read your question right?

I'll do it - lol (really, I will !)
If you love the board and would like to slide and change the fin position this is an interesting undertaking which will provide loads of fun by experimenting !

It will cost abit and take time, and there are risks if someone inexperienced tries to do it, but what the hell, you only live once :P !

I contacted FCS-Europe and they said FCS longboard fins are not available to fit the FCS plugs as the strain on the fin is too much.

Its a reasonably new board (used about a dozen times), I am hoping if it does get changed the result will be quite neat :?
The main reason for wanting it is to be able to ride a single fin.

Thanks again.

Indeed you would have to do this but if you have the right tools this is not a big deal. Where abouts are you jack?

Im in South Wales, Been told that I need to measure the thickness of the tail section as a new box may be too thick to fit.
Looking at the board it seems thick enough. Does anyone know the average depth of a fin box?

Been quoted £60, but there may be some marks where the plugs used to be as the fin box may not be wide enough to cover them

£60

fin boxes are around 30mm deep and you will need a set of calipers to check the thickness of your board in the area where the rear of the fin box is likely to be. Probably about 4 inches up from the tail. In my experience the marks will be minimal if visible at all. The width of fin boxes and fcs plugs are not all that different.
Offer to pay him £40, that is a much more sensible price.

where abouts did you ask? i had a fin plug repaired badly before up in the north east so took it back to south wales and was quoted 50 quid to have it removed and replaced properly so i didn't bother as the board was pretty old but i said well if i rip the plug out again how much will it cost and he said 25 quid for fin repair and i was just like, i'll snap it out now and just half the price of the repair.

all i can say is, get your board to KS and get him to sort it out for you

The price depends on the job I guess.
Polycell or plain resin, heat sinks or just suff it together, user requirements or something different, mix and cure time, finish, blend, extra work to bring the board back so it can be called one of my repairs and so on !

I'm a scientist and development engineer so I cut no corners and use all the required techniques all the time no matter how big or small the the job !

My stuff naver fails [touch wood !].

Not in this case, £60 for that job is a blatant rip off.
