I have a rookie question for longboarders... Do u all install the rack on top of ur car to carry the longboard? How much does the rack cost and where to install it?

I'm thinking buying my first board, but I live 30 miles to the beach. So car rack is a must, isn't it?

Yup, rack on the roof. Not a must, but totally worth it if you will be carrying a board a lot, or have a reasonably shiny car.

If you have rails, you put bars across them, if you have gutters, then you buy a rack that goes in those etc. Decent rack systems have dedicated feet for different models, and the bars attach to those.

Have a look at www.thule.com you can search for the kits by car model. Thule are at the top end of the price range, but IMO well worth it because the racks last forever, and if you change your car, you can usually just swap out the foot pack to fit the new one. If you get locking racks, you can get a few different solutions for locking your board to the racks too, which is worth it for peace of mind sometimes.

Then just get some webbing tie downs to strap the board to the racks.

Yeah I have Thule roof racks - I used to have a cheap set - but they bent and twisted after strapping the boards on so much.

Expensive though !

go with thule or yakima. i prefer thule though, because i like the square loadbars. better clamping force for attachments, and they just feel more secure than round bars (yakima) when strapping things down to it. they are pricey, but well worth it

thanks for all the replies so far... one last question: will the rack leave any mark on the car after unstalling? in case i need to sell the car in the future and the buyer donesn't need the rack...

Shouldnt do but it depends how it mounts I guess, that depends on the car itself.
