After you read the great tutorial links, I also strongly suggest finding a more experienced surfing buddy to paddle out with you (whom is patient and willing to give you some waves). Having a surfing "coach" whom can help you setup in the lineup, spot the correct waves to paddle for, when to start paddling...paddle harder etc. really will help you out tremendously compared to just going out and trying to wing it on your own.
some other quick tips for early success (or preventing early frustration)

- bigger board is easier to paddle and balance on (just a general comment)
- make sure winds are light and water currents are minimal (paddling)
- don't go out if waves are bigger than 4ft or chest high (you'll get pummelled around, possibly hurt and very exhausted from paddling so much)
- stay far away from any rocky areas, piers, jettys etc. - if water currents are strong and pull you towards them and you have trouble paddling away effectively you can get in a dangerous situation

Like most beginners (despite how in-shape or athletic you may think you are), you'll be shocked at how tiring and exhausting it is to paddle around a surfboard. Follow the 3-4 items above and it will make for easier, less stressful and a less exhausting experience at first.

There are some quick tips on how to surf in You Tube. Just do a search for "how to surf". Shows you how to stand up, how to catch a wave, how to turn. All the basics.
