Another reason you would find the board not coming around quickly is because of the rail going into the tail. Round tails are know for more drawn out turns because the rail going into the tail is straighter.
Nope, it doesn't reduce drag nor does it increase speed, sorry. All modern side fins are foiled, curved on the outside flat or slightly foiled on the inside. The foil creates lift, but what we mean by lift is not that it lifts the board, far from it, the lift is sideways, so when you turn you are being helped by the fin to turn. More help turning means less help going straight, so in essence you give up glide for turning ability.
But, anyway, nothing beats good form, so keep at it.
